Free LGBT+ Education in Schools
The Information Committee provides information on behalf of SHOUT Wageningen at primary and secondary schools in Wageningen and surrounding areas.
We currently give guest lectures at schools in Wageningen, Ede and Kesteren.
Our goal is to increase acceptance of homosexuality, bisexuality and transgender people.
You would think that in a country like the Netherlands this is not really necessary anymore.
However, we experience that the subject is still a big issue and that discrimination and misunderstanding still occur.
Many teenagers have difficulty coming out of the closet.
And when people talk about gay people, it is often in a negative sense.
We want to take the subject out of the taboo.
Education is still very much needed!
Quote
“I think it’s important to spend, instead of a few minutes, an entire lesson listening to people who have doubted their identity during their high school years. That’s the same period our students are in now, where discovering your identity plays a crucial role. It’s good to use SHOUT’s guest lectures to talk about the topic, they handle this serious subject with a lot of humor.”
High schools
During our classes, students have the opportunity to ask questions anonymously, our educators tell their personal coming out story and we hold a group discussion.
Our education is not aimed at forcing an opinion on students; we encourage them to think about the subject for themselves and show them our side of the story.
There are always students who disapprove of homosexuality.
With these students, we try to foster understanding.
This often results in lively discussions.
Afterwards, we often hear that students appreciated our lesson.
Primary Schools
For a few years now, we have also been active in elementary schools.
We focus on grades 7 and 8.
Obviously, this program looks different from the program for secondary schools.
We don’t talk about sex, but we do talk about topics such as courtship and “two daddies or two moms.”
We have an interactive elementary school method that consists of puzzles, games, a quiz and a review.
