In Dutch, also translated into German and Danish as Ich, Adrian Mayfield/Jeg Adrian Mayfield

It is 1894, and Adrian Mayfield is fed up with his job at a menswear store. But fed up enough to do something about it? When he gets fired, he doesn’t really have a choice. Without money and a place to stay he does the only thing he can think of: go to Augustus Trops, a painter who shopped at the store and said he would love to paint Adrian. Through Augustus Adrian gets introduced in the artistic circles of Oscar Wilde’s London. But when they all go to the continent for the summer, Adrian is again without money and does the only thing left for him: selling his body with the guys of Little College Street 13. When the summer is over he wants to leave this darker side of the gay scene behind, but is that possible? Under the surface of art, a lot is happening…

Schijnbewegingen is a book that takes you to the gay side of Victorian England, from the banquets to the gutter. It’s based on the life of Oscar Wilde, but very much fictional. It’s not always an easy world to live in, so it’s even better that with this book you get to experience it from the comfort of your own home. A great book to escape the world with (or come out of the closet with, as I did in high school during a presentation on this book).
